The key domestic indices posted steep losses. Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Realty and Nifty Bank shares declined.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tanked 1124.02 points or 1.52% to 72,771.72. The Nifty 50 index slumped 360.25 points or 1.56% to 22,780.25. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex slumped by 2.84% and 2.75%, respectively.

The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index posted steep losses of 1.62% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index plunged 1.62%.

The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1542 shares rose and 3690 shares declined. A total of 252 shares were unchanged.

HDFC Bank Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 216.76 lakh shares and saw a sharp decline of 28.93% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has moved higher 1.11% in last one-month and has dropped sharply 22.56% over last one year.

Eternal Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 195.6 lakh shares and recorded a modest decline of 0.63% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock is up around 1.21% in last one-month and has inched higher 0.83% over last one year.

Index action

The Nifty PSU Bank index fell sharply by 3.24% to 8026.1 today. The index is slightly lower by 0.28% in last one week and has drifted lower by 3.59% over last one month. It gained 12.19% in last one year. Bank of India (down 5.76%), Bank of Maharashtra (down 4.75%), Union Bank of India (down 4.69%), Indian Bank (down 3.55%) and Canara Bank (down 3.47%) traded lower.

The Nifty Realty index shed 2.12% to 850.9 today. The index has surged by 2.98% in last one week and has shed 5.28% over last one month. It is down 0.75% in last one year. Lodha Developers Ltd (down 4.11%), Aditya Birla Real Estate Ltd (down 3.20%), DLF Ltd (down 2.85%), Brigade Enterprises Ltd (down 2.34%) and Godrej Properties Ltd (down 1.78%) moved down.
