Economic Buzz: German retail sales lower by 0.3% in October

According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), retail sales in Germany fell by 0.3% in real terms (price-adjusted) and by 0.1% in nominal terms (not price-adjusted) in October 2025 compared to September 2025, after adjusting for calendar and seasonal effects.

Compared to October 2024, sales increased by 0.9% in real terms and by 2.2% in nominal terms. In September 2025, following a revision of the preliminary figures, retail sales increased by 0.3% in real terms and by 0.1% in nominal terms compared to August 2025.

Retail sales of food products rose by 1.2% in real terms and by 1.0% in nominal terms in October 2025 compared to the previous month, after adjusting for calendar and seasonal variations. Compared to October 2024, the increase in food retail sales was 1.8% in real terms and 3.7% in nominal terms.

In the non-food retail sector, calendar- and seasonally adjusted sales in October 2025 fell by 0.7% in real terms and 0.6% in nominal terms compared to the previous month. Compared to October 2024, sales increased by 1.0% in real terms and 1.9% in nominal terms.

In October 2025, online and mail-order sales declined by 0.6% in real terms and 0.4% in nominal terms compared to the previous month. However, compared to October 2024, online and mail-order sales grew by 4.0% in real terms and 4.6% in nominal terms.
